What Causes Dry Eyes?

Dry eyes have two root causes: poor tear quality or insufficient tear volume. Tears are critical for eye lubrication, so when we can’t make enough tears or the tears we make aren’t high enough quality, it can leave our eyes feeling dry and irritated.

Our tears are made up of three main ingredients: water, meibum (a type of oil), and mucin. Meibum is important because it forms a protective covering on the outside of each tear, slowing the evaporation process. Mucin helps our tears spread out evenly over the surface of our eyes.

When our tears evaporate too quickly or don’t fully cover the surface of our eyes, it can lead to dry eyes.

Our eyes produce tears using several different glands located in and around our eyelids. Tear production can be disrupted by age, certain medications, certain medical conditions, and environmental factors.

Dry or windy environments may cause our tears to evaporate too quickly, causing dry eye, while medications and medical conditions can inhibit tear production.

Dry Eye Treatments at Vision Source D.C. Focus Eyecare Center

Before we can begin treating your dry eyes, we need to understand what is causing them and craft a custom treatment plan. A complete dry eye assessment lets us get to the root of the problem, and incorporates a wide variety of advanced diagnostic techniques.

Like all services provided by Vision Source D.C. Focus Eyecare Center, our complete dry eye assessment is MOA-approved.

A proper diet plays a critical role in our health and can be used to treat some forms of dry eye.

Several studies have found that diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids can reduce eye inflammation as well as increase meibum production, providing relief for some forms of dry eye. Fish, nuts, and leafy greens are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

A large scale nutritional study (the AREDS2 study), which was completed in 2013, found that consuming vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, zeaxanthin, and zinc can improve your overall eye health.

Dry eyes may be caused by blepharitis, which is an infection of the eyelid margins that lead to a crusty, irritating buildup of debris and bacteria along the lid-line. BlephEx is an in-office treatment that involves using a small, hand-held cleaning tool to gently exfoliate the margins of your eyelids, clearing away the debris and relieving your symptoms.
