Ensure Your Eye Health with Regular Eye Exams

Regular eye exams are critical for ensuring your eyes remain healthy. Especially as we age, our eyes become more susceptible to vision issues and disease. Many of these diseases are asymptomatic in the early stages, meaning regular eye exams are the best way to catch any eye health issues early.

How Often You Should Have an Eye Exam

Between the ages of 18 to 64, you should be having an eye exam at least every 2 years. After the age of 65, it’s recommended that you visit your optometrist at least every year. Depending on your specific needs, we may recommend you visit more often to ensure your eye health. You might need to visit more often if you have:

  • History of eye disease
  • Health conditions like diabetes
  • Eye surgery or previous eye injury
  • High or progressive lens prescription

A Typical Eye Exam

A typical eye exam includes your history, vision testing, and medical evaluation of your eyes. We’ll evaluate your risk for eye issues and disease, see if we need to update your prescription, and test you for diseases like glaucoma and cataracts.

Usually, you’ll be at our office for about an hour and during that time we’ll test you for various eye health indicators, including:

All these tests are completely painless. One additional technique we may use is a dilated eye exam, which allows us to take a closer look at your eyes. Dilated eye exams are painless, but be prepared for some light sensitivity and difficulty with tasks like reading for a few hours after the exam.
